Travis Elementary, Travis AFB
I knew at an early age I wanted to be an Elementary Physical Education Teacher. Now I’m happy to say I have been teaching for 21 years doing exactly that. I strive to create a Physical Education program that bridges all curriculums. I was awarded Teacher of the Month for Channel 10 News Sacramento in August of 2009. I was named Travis Unified District Teacher of the Year in 2010.

TEAM Time
TEAM Time is an all school inclusive Physical Education program designed to provide every student and teacher an uplifting and energetic start to their day. Students and staff begin their day with a series of energetic dances, exercises, stretches, and announcements that aid in the creation of positive school moral and overall fitness.
Description:
TEAM Time is a Physical Education program that utilizes the first 15 minutes of school to provide fun and interactive dance and fitness routines to begin every student and teacher’s day. Students and staff enter the gym at the first bell and participate in a series of line dances, exercise routines, and stretches that are designed to increase heart rate and get everyone’s blood flowing. As studies have shown, with increased blood flow to the brain, students are more apt to learn and focus on lessons in the classrooms. TEAM Time provides a great physical start to the day as well as providing additional Physical Education minutes.
Overall Goal:
TEAM Time is a guaranteed program to increase Physical Education minutes in a time when many schools are struggling to meet the mandated minutes required by the state. This presentation will provide participants with ideas to create a similar program at their school. In addition, participants will be taught a variety of dances, and fitness ideas to include their programs.
Presentation Objectives:
1.Present participants with methods for creating an all school inclusive program that begins the school’s day with Physical Education.
2.Teach a variety of dances that can be incorporated in the program and taught in Physical Education classes.
3.Discuss the positive rewards from providing such program, such as
a.Including more Physical Education minutes
b.Great public relations material
c.Builds positive school moral
d.Enhances current dance units
e.Provides a time to make all school announcements
Outcomes:
By the conclusion of this presentation, participants will leave with many ideas on how to present and incorporate an all school program to administration and school personnel. Participants will also leave with many new dance routines that can be incorporated into their current Physical Education programs and upcoming school wide programs.
Positive Outcomes:
TEAM Time is a program that was inspired by Meg Greiner. I was able to create this program at my school to provide additional needed minutes in Physical Education. After 1 year, students and staff commented on what a positive result it had on the school. Parents gave positive reviews as well as attended many times during the school year. Test scores shot up. School moral improved. After several years, the school district made the decision to make this program district wide. This program has truly changed the face of my school and the views of Physical Education within my school district.
