Common Core and Physical Education: Linking Standards Appropriately
During this session, the presenters will deliver an overview of Common Core State Standards and various examples of how to appropriately link the Common Core State Standards with California Physical Education Standards, both at the elementary and secondary levels.
Over the past few years Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have definitely been a frequently discussed topic within the educational system. Physical Education is considered a technical subject with regard to referring to CCSS. Although CCSS may not seem to fit well when discussing Physical Education content, in reality and if done correctly, CCSS does fit well within Physical Education. Unfortunately, there are many resources that educators can view that do not provide complete and/or correct examples of how to appropriately link CCSS with California Physical Education Content Standards. This session will encourage its audience members to read both standards carefully and think differently when trying to understand not only the linkage between the two standards, but also the actions that should be followed as they successfully link the standards together. While this session will provide general information in the lecture form, it will also embolden audience participation in a hands-on activity that will further help with their understanding. Audience members will be provided with commonly used incorrect examples, in which they will have the opportunity to correct, to link the standards in order to deliver the utmost benefit to their students during class time.
