Tools for Health Classes
This session will discuss and demonstrate tools which can be utilized in the teaching of a quality secondary health class. Included will be demonstrations of powerpoints, apps, google docs. quickwrites, and spreadsheets which make class more interactive and enjoyable.
During the session, we will discuss and demonstrate different tools we have acquired or created in order to make class more meaningful, interesting, and engaging. Books are boring and since Health is the single most important class being taught in a student’s school career, it is imperative that we teach them everything they need to know in order to grow to be healthy adults.
Content to be discussed includes activities which can be utilized in the following units:
Skeleton System -- Online activity that explains and reinforces the concepts of structure and function
Circulatory System -- online activity that stresses the working of the heart and its parts
Exercise/Fitness -- online activities that balance exercise and calories
Nutrition -- spreadsheets for creating diets
Mental Health -- Program “Healthy Choices, Healthy Relationships” (Includes responsibility and consequences of being a teen parent)
Alcohol, Tobacco/Vaping, Drugs -- Consequences presented in a manner to help kids see the truth
Disease -- Online activity teaching about viruses, bacteria, and STD ppt
Reproduction – Discussions and activities to help with a subject that can be difficult
First Aid/CPR -- American Heart Association Friends & Family CPR
Main Point: There are many ways to teach a health class. By utilizing some easy programs, it can become more meaningful to the students and give them knowledge to become lifelong, healthy adults who can make good choices.
Objectives and goals: During this session, teachers will be introduced to new ideas they can immediately incorporate into their health classes. SMART Objectives will be employed in terms of detail, focus, measurability, attainable in the not too distant future, realistic and timely in that Health deals with every day issues.
Outcome: Teachers will be able to access the materials we will share with them and be able to use them upon return to their classroom.
