Christine Galvan is an Associate Professor of Kinesiology at California State University, Long Beach where she specializes in Physical Education Teacher Education and Positive Youth Development. Dr. Galvan has authored articles in peer-reviewed education journals and has presented at National and State education conferences. In addition to teaching undergraduate pre-service teachers and mentoring graduate students, Dr. Galvan conducts research that explores ways service-learning projects can enhance knowledge for university students, underserved populations, faculty, and the community. Her research uses a constructivist approach to focus on effective teaching practices in physical education while serving populations in need. Fitness, nutrition, and personal and social responsibility are the mechanisms used to reach, teach, and empower students. Mixed research paradigms are used to determine program outcomes.

Club Fit! An Elementary Physical Education and Mentoring Program
The purpose of this presentation is to describe a positive youth development physical education and mentoring program designed to meet the holistic needs of underserved children while simultaneously engaging pre-service teachers in academic content. The presentation will highlight the need for such a program, university-community collaboration, program in action, benefits of mentoring, and program outcomes.
Goal: The goals are to share positive youth development program outcomes from a dual perspective (elementary children and physical education pre-service teachers) and to provide ideas for program replication. Objective: Educators will receive information about Club Fit! and be able to incorporate ideas into their existing programs.
